. On September 11, 2016, on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the attack on the New York World Trade Center, a dedicated and talented group of artists designed and applied a 9-11 Memorial Mural to the Museum’s BM-60 Baggage Mail Car #7737.
. Dedicated in memory to the people of America who were lost on that fateful day, with special recognition to the first responders who ran in to save those trapped inside, this car and its art has stood as a hallowed reminder for five years at Riverhead, New York. It has become a beacon of reflection and thoughtful comfort for many Long Islanders. People visit this car at all times of the day and night to remember.
. On Saturday, September 11, 2021, the twentieth anniversary of the attack on America, another group of talented artists, organized by curator Patrick Voorhees, will create a new memorial wall. This new work is planned to show the World we have not forgotten and to show respect and hope for the future, yet with 9-11-01 on our minds.
. The Railroad Museum of Long Island believes the sensitive artwork of Meres One, Wore_IBM, Kenji.NYC and See_TF in 2016 should not ever be lost or forgotten. . Known by its iconic logo, the kneeling nymph known as Psyche “The Goddess of Purity” was named one of America’s most recognizable trademarks of the first half of the 20th century. She represents the purity, quality and vitality of every White Rock product.
. Merging with a historic New York City beverage maker, the Morgan Beverage Company, White Rock moved their operations to New York in 1948, relocating to Whitestone, Queens on Long Island. In 1885 the first “duck ranch” opened on Long Island, beginning a one hundred and thirty-four year love affair with the World Famous Long Island Duckling! At the height of production, seven million ducks were raised and shipped to market annually.
The RMLI celebrates the Long Island Duckling and its farmers with this 20th Century stock car. Accurately numbered for a LIRR car, it will be a LIONEL “Scale O” car that measures about 11 1/2″ in length with a minimum curve of O-31. In 1864, Joseph Mason and Ernest von Au created Mason & Au Confectioners at 81 Fulton St., Brooklyn, NY. A six story candy factory was built in 1892 at 22 Henry St. where Crows and DOTS were made until 1949.
Mason Candy relocated to a modern factory at 150 Old Country Road, Carle Place, NY. There, the Long Island Rail Road delivered tank cars of corn syrup to make the candies!

Long Island has been a source of potatoes since the mid 1800’s. In Spring the Long Island Rail Road delivered long unit trains of seed potatoes to farmers on the East End. In Fall 110 car trains full of harvested potatoes headed west to market.
1853 saw the potato chip become an All-American snack and in 1952 the potato chip became a Long Island commodity. Since 2004, the tradition continues with Sidor Farm’s North Fork Potato Chips.

By 1850 the Long Island Rail Road had lost their monopoly on passenger service from Brooklyn to Boston. The search was on for the railroad to create revenue streams to remain viable into the 20th Century.
Long Island farmers were interested in ways to transport fresh produce to New York City markets as quickly as possible. In 1884 the LIRR placed farmers’ loaded wagons on flatcars. Fresh fruits and vegetables from Long Island could be at New York City markets the same day they were harvested!

The Long Island Rail Road provided transit for hundreds of thousands of visitors to the 1964 – 1965 New York World’s Fair. To highlight this important aspect of the Fair, the LIRR built a pavilion complete with an Allan Herschell G-16 Park Train.
In 2003, the RMLI restored and initiated operation of that very same G-16 Park Train at its Museum in Riverhead, NY. Today we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that LIRR G-16 Park Train with this Lionel operating “aquarium car.” Inside, illuminated and running past the clear windows, is a painting by “America’s Caboose Artist,” George L. Wybenga of the G-16 pulling a trainload of happy visitors at the RMLI!
This car is the first in a series of three cars celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 – 1965 New York World’s Fair.

RCA Operating Radar Car

In 1921 RCA, the Radio Corporation of America, built the world’s largest and most powerful radio transmitting station of its time at Rocky Point and Riverhead, Long Island, NY. On November 5, 1921 U.S. President Warren G. Harding pressed a button in his office at the White House signaling the start of the Alexanderson generators at “Radio Central.”
Closed in 1978 to become New York State parkland, the RMLI celebrates fifty-seven years of RCA communications history on Long Island with this Lionel collectible car.

In 1921, Wichita, Kansas based White Castle, revolutionized the restaurant trade by opening the first fast-food hamburger chain store. The first fast-food restaurant to be placed outside a major city in the United States was the 1933 Lynbrook, Long Island, NY White Castle. Located just across Broadway from the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station, this White Castle restaurant continues to refresh hungry commuters at the same location after eighty years!
The RMLI celebrates the history of the first ever fast-food hamburger restaurant on Long Island, White Castle, with this collectible trailer on flat car built by Lionel.

Constructed in the 1870’s as the Shults Bread Co. – a Jamaica, Queens, NY bakery became famous in 1925 when it began to produce sliced Wonder Bread under the Taggart label. Throughout its long record, the Long Island Rail Road served this bakery from a siding at 170th Street, delivering ingredients necessary to make the famous bread that is still with us today! The RMLI celebrates the history of Wonder Bread on Long Island with this collectible covered hopper car built by Lionel.

J.P. Holland Submarine on Flatcar

. The USS Holland, (Submarine Torpedo Boat #1), was the United States Navy’s first commissioned submarine, named for her Irish-American inventor, John Phillip Holland. It had both an internal combustion engine for running on the surface and an electric motor for submerged operation. She had a reloadable torpedo tube and a deck gun. USS Holland, (SS-1), along with six other Holland Torpedo Boat Company submarines, was based in New Suffolk, Long Island, NY between 1899
. Between 1899 and 1905 USS Holland, (SS-1), and six other Holland Torpedo Boat Company submarines were based on the North Fork of Long Island – between the two RMLI sites – at New Suffolk, N.Y. They were outfitted and completed their sea trials in Peconic Bay before being accepted by the Navy.
. When the Holland Torpedo Boat Company moved to the Thames River at New London, Connecticut, proud New Suffolk hamlet was left only with the claim of being the “First Submarine Base” in the United States!

. King Kullen Grocery Co. is a supermarket chain with 46 locations on Long Island and the New York City borough of Staten Island. King Kullen is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as America’s first supermarket. Michael J. Cullen opened the first location on August 4, 1930, in the Jamaica neighborhood of the New York City borough of Queens. Cullen was the first to combine the elements that define the modern supermarket: self-service, separate departments, discount pricing, chain marketing and dealing in volume. He advertised as “the world’s greatest price wrecker” and adopted the motto, “Pile it high, sell it low.” The chain is still owned and operated by descendants of Michael J. Cullen.

. Since 1948, Riverhead Building Supply has relied on the railroad to bring lumber and building materials to eastern Long Island. Most of the lumberyard’s early locations were located near a train station or had a rail spur to bring freight cars right into the yard for unloading. Although many deliveries now arrive by roadways rather than railways, the railroad still plays an integral part in the lumber industry, conveying lumber and sheathing from the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic Coast.

. The Lionel Corp. maintained showroom train layouts at 15 East 26th St. in New York City. Their 1949 layout was disassembled in 1954 to make room for a new “Lionel Super O Track” layout and was stored in pieces somewhere in New Jersey. The beloved 1949 showroom layout eventually disintegrated in storage to a point that it was impractical to repair and it was eventually trashed.
. In 1991 a group of Lionel LTI employees at the Mount Clemens, MI corporate offices, built on a volunteer basis, a train layout that evoked the classic design of the 1949 showroom layout. It featured a 14-foot by 40-foot train table with seven running trains and 37 operating accessories. The Lionel Visitors Center Layout opening to the public on Feb. 19, 1992 . . . . . . . . . it closed its doors on June 20, 2008.
. In February 2009, volunteers from the Railroad Museum of Long Island went to the shuttered Lionel Visitors Center at Mount Clemens to determine how to disassemble and move the 1992 layout to Long Island. On April 7, 2009 the RMLI received an official letter from Lionel LLC, donating the layout to the Museum for the purpose of its continued exhibition to the public at RMLI’s Riverhead, NY facilities.
. RMLI purchased a forty feet long shipping container, loaded it with sixty-eight 8′ 2X4s (for construction of shelving) and all the tools and equipment needed to carefully disassemble the layout and bring it back to New York in fifteen pieces. In early May, the RMLI Team went back to Michigan and accomplished the task in three days. The total weight of the layout was just over seven thousand pounds!
. “The Magic Lives On . . . . . . ” On April 9, 2011 the Museum opened the Historic Lionel Layout within the renovated Freeman North Exhibit Hall at its campus in Riverhead, NY. A cadre of dedicate volunteers continue to maintain and upgrade the layout, keeping it in top operating condition for people from all over the World to view and enjoy. Today seven O Gauge trains, one S Gauge train, one N Scale miniature park train and two trolleys run on the layout, eighty-three accessories are operated from push buttons along the edge of the layout.

Entenmann’s Operating Boxcar

In 1898, William Entenmann opened a bakery in Brooklyn, New York. Traveling by horse-drawn buggy, he delivered bread, cakes and other baked goods door to door. In the early 1900’s the family moved to Bay Shore, Long Island. Today, over 100 years later, Entenmann’s still bakes their famous fresh and delicious sweet baked goods and delivers daily to stores across the US.
To commemorate Entenmann’s ties to Long Island, the RMLI has created this Lionel factory produced “operating boxcar.” The door opens and a figure tosses a package of Entenmann’s cookies out the door!

The RMLI is proud to announce a Lionel Collectible Car representing a mode of freight transportation, Containers on Flatcars (COFC), that was a common sight on Long Island in the last Century.
During the 1970’s, Defense Contractors on Long Island had to diversify production to control their overhead costs. Many decided to do this by taking on work for commercial contractors. Republic Aviation, which became Fairchild Hiller, contracted with Boeing Corporation to fabricate parts for their 747 passenger plane wings. These parts would travel by rail from the plant in Farmingdale, NY to the Wing Final Assembly Plant and then on to Seattle, WA to be installed on the Boeing 747’s.
This Lionel factory produced “Container on Flat Car” is painted in a scheme to represent the cars that left Farmingdale, NY.

The RMLI is proud to announce a Lionel Collectible Car celebrating 175 years of trains running on Long Island!
The Long Island Rail Road was Chartered on April 24, 1834 and is the oldest Class 1 railroad in the United States still operating under its original name and Charter. The original purpose of the LIRR was to create a rail-ferry-rail connection from Brooklyn, NY to Boston, MA. The “Main Line” route was to be by rail to Greenport, NY on Long Island’s North Fork; then by boat to Stonington, CT; where you would continue by rail through Providence, RI and eventually to Boston.
By the late 1880’s, the LIRR was planning direct access to Manhattan Island by a tunnel connected to Grand Central Terminal. Simultaneously, the Pennsylvania Railroad was planning access to Manhattan eastbound from New Jersey. In 1900, the PRR paid six million dollars for a controlling interest in the LIRR and incorporated the companies to build the “New York Tunnel Extension” from New Jersey through Manhattan to Long Island City, NY. Pennsylvania Station was built to accommodate both railroad entities.
In 2013 the LIRR intends to initiate service to Grand Central Terminal. (Editor’s note: currently, LIRR East Side Access to Grand Central Madison is anticipated to be completed in December 2022.)

Envision a delivery of gold bullion being shipped to the North Fork of Long Island from Fort Knox, KY by the Long Island freight transportation company, New York & Atlantic Railway.
This Lionel factory produced car is painted in official North Fork Bank colors and feature the logos of the North Fork Bank and the New York and Atlantic Railway. The Pennsylvania 39 Keystone represents the Pennsylvania Rail Road ownership of the Long Island Rail Road in October 1955, when the last steam engine to run on Long Island, the G5s Class #39, was taken out of service.

Atlantis Marine World Aquarium Car

Located on East Main Street in Riverhead, along the Peconic River, Atlantis Marine World is the first large scale aquarium to open in New York State in more than thirty-five years. Atlantis Marine World is also home to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation and is New York State’s only authorized marine mammal and sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation center.
This Lionel factory produced car is painted in official LIRR orange and gray colors. It has an operating can motor that moves illuminated sharks through the car and features the Atlantis Marine World logo.
